Celbrating A Decade of Adventure!

Share it Please

U.K. newspaper the Telegraph has a great story today, reviewing the past ten years, and all the adventures that have taken place during that time period. The story is a bit slanted towards explorers and expeditions from the U.K., but there have been so many over the past decade, that it still produces a very fun, and impressive list.

The article spans "The Noughties", the Telegraph's term for the first ten years of the 21st Century, starting in 2000, and working there way up to the present. Some of the big names that get a nod on the list include, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who had quite the decade, climbing the Eiger and Everest, and making an attempt on the North Pole. Others include Pen Hadow and Ben Saunders, both of which made impressive polar expeditions, and Jason Lewis, who spent 13 years, covering 46,000 miles on bike, kayak, paddle boat, and inline skates, while circling the globe.

Of course, there are plenty more great expeditions and adventurers in the story as well. It's a wonderful trip down memory lane, reminding us of some great stories and even uncovering a few I hadn't heard about. The end of the story has a few "Misadventures" too, which remind us that ambition needs to sometimes be mixed with a healthy dose of good luck for these men and women to succeed in their tasks.

The first thing I thought while reading this story was "Wow! The first decade of the millennium is over! Where did it go?" But then when I started to really dive into the piece, it reminded me that there are still so many great adventures taking place all over the world. It's a tribute to the indomitable spirit of these men and women who often do these amazing things just to satisfy their own cravings for exploration and adventure. These are the same people that I write about all the time, and it's a huge reason why I started this blog in the first place.
